Reaching out towards young people of Zagreb in the prevention of smoking, alcohol and drug abuse

Summary:
The project is an answer to a great social and health problem of tobaco, alcohol and drug abuse and to the increasing trend of a lower age of the first substance abuse (12-14 years of age) in Croatia. It is targeted to two risk groups – the young aged between 15-29 that gather in city parks and the population of young Roma people. These two target groups are informed and educated on other possible ways of spending their free time and the harmful effects of tobaco, alcohol and drug abuse through a number of outreach activities.

Cleaning and management of infective waste and connecting the community

Summary:
The project is a reflection of more and more drug equipment (needles and syringes) found in children's playgrounds, school parks and green areas in the city of Zagreb and in Zagrebačka županija. It is furthermore a contibution to the concept of sustainable development where the goals of protecting the environment are aligned to longterm national social, health and economic interests. Drug equipment is a source of severe contagious diseases – such as hepatitis B and C, HIV/AIDS – where children and young people are at the most risk, as are other citizens (parents, teachers, cleaning ladies).

The project is implemented through outreach acitivities and by educating the public on the issue. The citizens are invited to inform outreach workers when they come across such waste by calling the info-telephone.

Social inclusion of single parent families in Croatia

NGO Flight has been developing projects for single parents since 2004 because of a great number these families present in the Croatian society and the specific problems these families face in every day life, which correspond to the goals and the mission of the Organisation.

The projects are implemented in order to improve the quality of life of single parents and to increase public awareness on the needs of the single parent families in Croatia. In short term, the projects’ goals are improving single parents’ knowledge on legal, social and psychological aspects of single parenting and motivating them for self- organizing and improving their knowledge on the possibilities and advantages of forming their associations, motivating local governments to publicly discuss the changes in the family structure with an emphasis on the needs of single parents, improving public knowledge on single parents’ needs and motivating the community on providing social support and help to single parents, raising awareness among politicians on the national level about the needs of single parent families.

The first edition of the For and About Single Parent Families publication had been distributed in four largest cities in Croatia, Rijeka, Split, Zagreb and Osijek, with the intention to reach a greater number of single parents. The book was written on the basis of experiences of participants of the Educational Center for Single Parent Families workshops, and by including theories from recent studies on single parents and useful information. When the book was presented in the four cities, single parents, experts, representatives of local authorities were present and they were able to discuss the needs of single parents and possible ways of addressing those needs. The book is also presented on Flight’s web site.
